Cancer that develops in the lymphocytes or the infection-fighting cells in the body is known as lymphoma. There are more than 70 types of lymphoma identified by experts, and some of them are more aggressive and common than the others. Here are some of the common types of lymphoma one should know about:

Hodgkin’s lymphoma: People with this condition have large tumor cells called Reed-Sternberg (RS) in their bodies.

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL): This is one of the most common types of lymphoma, and the American Cancer Society estimates that about 77,240 people in the country will be diagnosed with this type of cancer in 2020. This lymphoma can also be categorized into several types.

B-cell lymphoma: This is a type of NHL cancer that is aggressive in its growth and spread. It develops due to the abnormal production of B-cells in the body, and it can be successfully treated if identified early.

Burkitt’s lymphoma: Another aggressive type of NHL, Burkitt’s lymphoma most commonly affects people in Sub-Saharan Africa. In the country, about 1200 people are affected by this type of lymphoma every year, and more than half the population affected is over 40 years of age.

T-cell lymphoma: One of the common types of lymphoma, about 15% of people with NHL are diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma. Some of the common types of T-cell lymphoma are mentioned here:

• Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma (CTCL)
• Angioimmunoblastic lymphoma
• Precursor T-lymphoblastic lymphoma/leukemia
• Peripheral T-cell lymphoma
• Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL)

Follicular lymphoma: Of all the common types of lymphoma diagnosed in the country, 20% of the patients are diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. The average age at which this condition affects a person is 60 years. This is a slow-growing lymphoma that starts in the White Blood Cells (WBCs) and can spread throughout the body.

Mixed cellularity Hodgkin’s lymphoma: This is a type of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma that is more commonly seen in elderly men as compared to women. About 25% of all the types of Hodgkin’s cancers are mixed cellularity Hodgkin’s lymphomas, and this type of lymphoma contains the presence of both lymphocytes and Reed Sternberg (RS) cells, which are also called B-cells.

The survival rate of people diagnosed with lymphoma within a year of the onset of the disease is 92%. This explains the importance of knowing the common types of lymphoma and understanding their symptoms. One should keep an eye out for any changes in their body and not hesitate to talk to a doctor if they notice any signs of the disease. This can facilitate early diagnosis and increase the chances of successful treatment.
